Alas Purwa

from Bali To Mali by Catur Hari Wijaya

/

about

The title “Alas Purwa” (pronounced alas purwo) is composed of two Javanese words alas that means “forest”, and purwa that means “ancient”, “ancestor” or “beginning”.

The lyrics were written using a metaphorical style of poetry.
The message of the song is a reminder to honour the past and celebrate the present.
Honouring the past with gratitude for our ancestors who passed down their wisdom; celebrating and embracing the present with gratitude for God who is present in every breath.

“Alas Purwa" is the last song that Catur composed for the album Bali To Mali.
When Catur created the melody, he immediately felt that this was the album’s missing piece and the reason why the recording of Bali To Mali didn’t happen sooner.
The melody has an East Javanese soundscape using the gamelan scale from Banyuwangi.
Catur channeled this song’s lyrics only a month after its melody was created. During all this time, Catur couldn’t find lyrical inspiration, until one day, he came back from the cremation of his musical father, Philippe Janssens. That night, the lyrics just came to Catur’s mind, like a divine whisper.

lyrics

Lyrics:
Çandikala mbranang kaya teja
Kidung kukila mecahna swasana

Sekar lan dupa anyebar rasa lena
Kahanan eluh nggugah ati lan rasa

Ajining awak iki saka lathi
Alining raga saka busana

Hang memuji karsaning Gusti (x4)

Translation:
The bright sunset like a burning fire
The singing of the birds breaks the silence

The scent of incense and flowers drifted you off into a daydream,
Whirling up your feelings and your soul.

Through speech, one is perceived
Through faith, one is respected

Praise to God and surrender to His will
