Bocah Tua Nakal

from Bali To Mali by Catur Hari Wijaya

/

about

“Bocah Tua Nakal” is a piece dedicated to Catur’s musical mentor, Philippe Janssens.

Pak Philippe, a classically trained Luthier, gifted Catur with an amazing array of hand-crafted and unique string instruments which enabled Catur to explore many new musical pathways. Pak Philippe constantly encouraged Catur to “drum on strings”, using his in-depth knowledge of traditional drumming patterns and translating the rhythms into stringed melodies. When Catur started to play these incredible instruments, he instantly felt a strong musical connection with them. One instrument in particular, the barbat (a lute of Persian origin), inspired Catur on a creative journey, and soon a stream of previously unexplored notes and melodies started flowing. This is how the adventure of Bali To Mali began!

As well as a mentor, Philippe was above all a dear friend to Catur. Their companionship grew through musical jams and whimsical discussions about serious subjects. Philippe had a pure heart with a witty tongue and he kept a youthful and playful spirit to the very last day of his eventful life.
The title of this piece, Bocah Tua Nakal, means “the naughty old boy” in Javanese and it sums up, in a comical way, this incredible artist; a man who never took himself too seriously.

Philippe Janssens was born in Belgium of a gypsy mother and a Belgian father. To honour Philippe’s roots, the soundscape of “Bocah Tua Nakal” is inspired from the gypsy folk music that he learned at an early age on his Romani grandmother’s knee. The song includes many musical ornaments (or notes) that embellish the original melody line. The main ornamentation used in “Bocah Tua Nakal” is the mordent that is characterised by a rapid alternation between two notes.
