Kanjeng is a title given to someone who has a high position in Java. There are many interpretations to the word Kanjeng. Some use Kanjeng to define a person at the same ranking as the nobles in the palace environment, but this meaning is not actually correct. Etymologically, the word Kanjeng comes from kang ajeng or “the one who is in front” such as a priest, a leader or ruler. Kanjeng is not a certain noble title such as Raden (Javanese nobility title) or Prince, but rather a very polite greeting for the any important person.

The lyrics are Catur’s interpretation in Javanese of the Arabic prayer for the Prophet Mohammed; a prayer called “Sholawat Nabi” by the Indonesian Muslims.

When Catur composed the melody of “Kanjeng” he started with a beat inspired by the Kuntulan rhythm from Banyuwangi, in East Java. Kuntulan dance and music traditions are originally performed in the village during the celebration of the prophet Mohammed. The Kuntulan is actually a combination of ancient Banyuwangi traditions with Middle Eastern culture. Foreign Muslims had traded in Indonesia for many centuries and have impacted the Archipelago in many ways, from religion to arts and music.
Starting from the Kuntulan beat, Catur then added some North African musical spices, such as the use of Qraqeb, the large metallic castanet-like instrument primarily used as the rhythmic aspect of Gnawa music. The main stringed instrument of Kanjeng is Catur’s gurun.
