about

Salam or salaam means “peace” in Arabic, and in Bahasa Indonesia Salam means “greetings.”

“Salam” was composed one evening after Catur had a deep and thought provoking conversation with his best friend about the oppression of the Palestinian people. Later that night, when the two friends were having a casual music jam, Catur channeled a new melody with a middle eastern soundscape. “Salam” was born but not named yet.

A couple of days later, the second daughter of Catur’s best friend was born and she was named Salam. Catur’s connection with Salam’s family has always been strong and special, and he felt that the energy of birth and love is also what brought this melody to life and he decided to name his composition “Salam” as well.

Catur dedicated this piece to the Palestinian people and to all the people who live in war zones. “Salam” is a musical prayer for the world to focus on love and peace for the future generations.

The melody of “Salam” has a middle eastern influence using an Arabic musical mode called maqam. The Arabic maqam (plural: maquamat) is a system of scales, habitual melodic phrases, modulation possibilities, ornamentation techniques and aesthetic conventions, that together form a rich melodic framework and artistic tradition.
The maqam used for this song's melody is the Nahawand maqam that is said to be romantic and passionate, and holds the feelings of yearning.
